Check Out a Thoughtful Play, Depicting the Work of Writer Langston Hughes

Since 1979, Stage West Theatre has strived to entertain, inspire, and challenge through great live theatre and to offer educational outreach services to the community. The season is comprised of a wide range of works that reflect national conversation and the human experience today. Stage West Theatre is excited to present “Are You Now, or Have You Ever Been...”, a play by Carlyle Brown.

In this moving play, American writer, Langston Hughes, fitfully attempts to compose a poem. As accusations whirl, censorships abound, and freedoms are called into question, this inspired-by-true-events drama examines not only the tense yet necessary relationship between art and politics, but also the connection between the artist and his craft.

Carlyle Brown is a writer/performer and artistic director of Carlyle Brown & Company, based in Minneapolis. His plays include “The African Company Presents Richard III”, “The Beggars’ Strike”, “Pure Confidence”, and others. He is a recipient of playwriting fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, Jerome Foundation, Theatre Communications Group, and the Pew Charitable Trust.
